Ok why the hell this happens?
Because you know you have an edgy, but harmless sense of humor that you can indulge in with your trusted friend group, but you know it will be taken the wrong way to strangers.
I think it’s more that your friends have to trust you for edgy humor to work. The funniness from edgy humor comes from the dissonance between what a person says and how that person is.
If you make a joke like:
Selling cigarettes to school kids is a great way to make some extra money.
You’re friends would laugh because they know you and know you wouldn’t actually do something like that. A stranger may get uncomfortable because they don’t know you and may think you actually are doing that.
Same with racist, sexist jokes, if your friends know you and know your not racist or sexist then they can work. If they are unsure then it’ll make them uncomfortable because they may think that’s how you actually are.
i wish i understood how it was edgy; it feels absolutely dull and blunt, but it clearly isn’t based on the number of people i piss off and/or make cry without ever intending to.
I’ve actually distanced myself from some people because I felt like I was always walking on eggshells around them. Some people have a very sitcom centered humor and if stray a little too far from that, they get angry.
the only people i have in my life to inflict my humor upon are employers so it makes me wish i could stay away. lol
