Hardly any historians believe there was a massacre on the square, especially not after the US cables were leaked and confirmed China’s official reporting as accurate. Hundreds died that day in riots around Beijing, from PLA officers firebombed to rioters killed by the PLA, but the square itself was evacuated bloodlessly.
