May have been obvious to others, but I only caught this detail recently after using Linux for over 15 years.

In LILO days, the bootloader barely fit in the MBR and the kernel was located and loaded with sheer magic incomprehensible to most mortals. So that’s why Tux has no shoes.
Because despite having a boot partition Tux appears to not wear shoes
