The EU has already noticed. Manufacturers have to provide software updates for five years, for all new devices since June.

i thought it was more about making the older models shittier with updates. like apple limiting battery capacity, samsung slowing down and removing features, etc. i had s22u and it had tons of customization, you could put a calendar or a gif in the AOD but suddenly they removed it all, you could only change the color of the clock.

And meanwhile Apple has been providing 6+ years of FULL updates for over a decade

      But they’re the bad guys?

Not the point, but they’re the bad guys for other reasons. Walled garden, bad repairability etc. Their update policy is really solid, though.

Apple supports their phones for at least 5 years. iPhone XS from 2018 is still supported by the current version of iOS. As iOS 26 just came out, that means 8 years of software support.

Rocking my iPhone 11 Pro Max with OG battery.

Reckon I can get through easy until the 18 or the Fold.

No idea what you’re talking about.

Ha same, I keep saying I’ll upgrade next generation and it’s always underwhelming. Especially now that they’ve been huffing their own farts about ai. My battery capacity is at 70% off what it originally had what’s yours at?

No, you see you aren’t using technology the right way.

You need to hate Apple and instead buy a product that isn’t as good to stick it to them, then you can complain about this stuff with everyone else.

I know it’s not the topic. I just wanted to say that it is useless for me despite it’s update policy.

Microsoft for example can offer a great Microsoft Office experience that has all the AI agents I ever wanted - but as a Linux user that doesn’t help.

Also Ford can make a car that is really great for saving fuel - much better than Peugeot - but I only ride bikes.

You can call it whatboutism, but for me it’s just a shitty product I do not need.

Yeah but they make their devices terribly slow. I had a 8 y/o Oneplus 5 with Lineage OS 22.2 which was running as fast as my iPhone 13 pro with iOS 26 — which wasn’t the case 3 years back when I bought the iPhone. Unfortunately the motherboard of OP5 is dead because of wear & tear due to everyday use and is not worth the repair cost. So yeah, even my Oneplus 5 got 8 years of software updates (although not officially) and may get some more if the LineageOS team would still maintain it.

Software updates are using carrots (?) to lure in mobile phones?

Edit: no wait, that’s a finger, I think. I don’t know what the software updates are holding.

This is an android only issue FWIW

The comment below me saying iPhones do this is referencing 10 year old information.

      Yes.

On the other hand, I have to basically hack an iPad 5 to use essentially any app on it that’s relevant and/ or not a subscription service.

Meanwhile I can put PostmarketOS on devices over a decade old on the android side.

So while they support longer, once no longer supported, essentially e-waste even though they have pretty good hardware, just cuz.

iPhones have a setting where as the battery ages they can throttle the cpu, you can disable this setting.

It did it briefly against users will on batteries that were at a certain age / wear threshold, then Apple started offering decreased battery replacement costs and added a toggle for this feature that the user could control. It’s been there since iOS 11 back in 2018.

How long will it take until the idiot consumers will notice and instead buy devices that aren’t at the mercy of the manufacturer?
