To be fair a phone that can be docked and used as any number of other workstations should really be the goal. One device that can do everything is the dream… Running Linux also a requirement.
I did Samsung dex for a while, its ok as long as you don’t want low level access to what you connecting to.
Now I switched to a gpd micropc 2 and its built in ethernet, sd card, usb a and c sockets and native linux make it so much more useful. No longer do i need dongles or other rubbish.
Plus it will do multiple monitor support, something dex struggles with. The keyboard is a little small for touch typing but the former factor is worth the trade of for me.
Starting from Android 15 you should be able activate a native “terminal” app in the Developer Settings, which is Debian running in a VM. No need for termux anymore. I have it activated in GrapheneOS but haven’t used it much.
With the many attempts in Android to implement this it’s a little shocking that there hasn’t been more work in the open source space, but I guess Ubuntu mobile and Firefox OS couldn’t even make a dent and mobile costs so much to develop for
I actually own a sex toy that, in order to use certain features, I need to connect to my phone via bluetooth and log in to their server on their app with a username and password. Careful what you wish for.
We made some progress for a bit when we had the Samsung Dex that could run Ubuntu. The closest thing I have now is the steam deck but it’s easier to just have a laptop that plugs in

You’re describing Ubuntu’s Convergence, something Canonical was working on back in like 2011 I think.
Sucks nothing really came of it. By 2014 there were a few functional demos of it but you don’t really see it nowadays.

To be fair, all that buttplugs lack is internet connectivity and support for basic office software.
Now everyone can get fucked by Microsoft Excel

Shit. Get Lovense or something instead. Still has Bluetooth connectivity but there are so many open source clients to make use of.
Thanks for the suggestion!
The furry community has your back!
Hey some do have internet connectivity.
Why wouldn’t the buttplug have internet connectivity? Kids, remember to update your sex toys with the latest security patches!
after seeing several comments, and wondering whether everyone gets the reference, I’ve decided to just link the reference
Maybe I should watch iasip Holy shit that was great
It’s pretty good, one of only a handful of shows that I can tolerate rewatching. The humor in unrepentant assholes constantly getting their comeuppance is pretty timeless.
Edit: lemmy, that wasn’t a username, and frankly, I don’t even know how you came to the conclusion that it was!
It says it’s connected & morse code exists
The dream is playing music on the strings of reality. A phone is just a pitstop.

Some of the Windows phones had that feature. But the technology was still a bit clunky at the time.
The ER staff don’t like it when people dock phones with their butt.
Yes! Need a proper Linux phone at long last!
