Decentralization blunts a lot of what individual self-important admins can censor. Communities that aren’t constantly harassing their moderators and moderators who aren’t banning people tend to flourish relative to those that are endlessly squabbling and strangling one another.
We’ve already seen a number of Lemmy instances fail when their user base grew too toxic. And we’ve seen new instances take off by being release valves for individuals who want to form communities uninhibited by bullshit.
