Still is in many ways. I’m not sure sure if you’ve used a Linux phone recently but they have worse security and usability than anything Android has to offer.
Custom roms like Lineage OS offer a much better experience. It would be cool if Android was a bit more open or there was an actual alternative but for now AOSP based systems are still much better

It was better, but Google no longer committed to not being evil.
I don’t know what is, but Android is no longer the future for a better experience.
