I was enrolled in community college for computer science around '08-'09. I completed Visual Basic and C++ intro courses in before switching to mechanical engineering, which is now my field of employment. I built a Windows Media Center HTPC with a tuner card during my community college years. That HTPC evolved over time, and eventually Microsoft killed WMC. I tried Plex TV recording, but that sucked balls compared to WMC. The latest incarnation of that computer runs TrueNAS, and I’m not really doing much with it beyond self-hosting media, but I have a Mint VM installed and set up for a Valheim dedicated server in anticipation of the 1.0 release next month. I might eventually move Home Assistant off a Pi into my TrueNAS, but it hasn’t been high-priority.

This has mostly affected me on my work PC. I just tried installing it to find out IT blocks adding new extensions now. :(

I’ll just have to be extra careful not to reflexively close Firefox if my tabs don’t show up, and make sure to make a backup of the old session file before restarting.

Windows 10 extended support on my main PC: if I have nothing better to do in the moment, I’ll update before Windows picks the most inconvenient time to do it for me.

Windows 11: I almost never wake this laptop. When I do, it’s always downloading and installing updates, running hot and at full tilt. Miserable POS.

TrueNAS: there’s an update?

Home Assistant: maybe once every month or every other month, but only after perusing the change logs and checking against the breaking changes list.

Android: leave the update notification in the tray until I get home on my Wi-Fi, forget about it until I see it again the next day when I’m away from Wi-Fi again, rinse and repeat.

Honestly, of all the things I have to update, I find Firefox the most painful, firstly because of the suspension of functional browsing if I ignore it long enough (there’s enough apps out there that update cleanly at launch that I feel like that should be the norm instead of forcing an end to a session), and secondly because updates have wiped my tabs on two occasions. I successfully recovered my tabs from a backed-up session file once, but completely lost them on the other occasion.

I’d say your list is a bit too short. Some more considerations (not comprehensive):

• Construction noise and seismic limits (nearby neighborhoods have been disturbed and experienced damage from blasting operations)
• Operating noise limits (ban on-site gas turbine generation, limit noise levels from cooling towers)
• Limit light pollution

If they had done this 6 months ago, I would have probably picked Unraid. I hated the idea of using a USB boot device, so I went with TrueNAS instead.

I don’t know that he really wanted to fully execute on Hyperloop so much as build hype (and Tesla stock price) around the idea while sabotaging funding for California’s high speed rail project. But yes, end goal to keep people buying his cars.

For what it’s worth, my LG washer has sent 14.3 MB in the past MONTH, but my Unifi router has misidentified my Nvidia Shield TV as another LG washer. The Shield has downloaded 11.6 GB in the past month, mostly from YouTube. While I don’t doubt it’s possible for a washer to send/receive that much data if it’s compromised and part of a botnet, I’d also question whether the device in question is actually an LG laundry appliance.

Not to detract from graphene, but stock Android can let you manage what specific pictures each app has access to. I don’t trust Meta with full access to my gallery, so anytime I have to upload something to Whatsapp, I have to specifically grant permission for that photo to Whatsapp.

I think this can be explained by the mentality of completely naked means I’m not leaving the house, but naked with shoes means I intend to go somewhere.
