KDE for me was death by 1000 cuts. I’d get a notification that I need to reboot my system but clicking the X doesn’t close it. The settings GUI pretty abysmal, but ig when you compare it to Windows it still looks golden. Randomly can’t wake up from sleep sometimes until i restart my display manager from a TTY. The “task manager” didn’t let me see all running tasks… It’s somehow so polished while also being janky.

Gnome alternatively is all polish, but you have to fight tooth and nail to go beyond defaults. I’m sure it’s more bloated too.

Now im on Niri with plenty of other problems but at least they’re my fault!

edit: I feel the need to extol the virtues of KDE plasma as I still do return to it when i’ve had enough of niri’s BS for the day

I just assumed the python one would be more bloated inherently, and that is the common theme I’ve heard about matrix specifically. I tried using an alternative server supposedly lighter on resources but just never finished setting up ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Fluxer is a direct Discord drop-in. Matrix requires a lot of setup and tweaking to get high throughput video. Plus the default server and client are bloated and buggy

you have to remember that proton is translating Windows software to Linux while you play so the fact that it works at all is pretty great, but of course it’s not a great experience you’ve had!

Have you tried experimental proton versions in the compatibility settings? Also do you have the proprietary nvidia drivers?

Frankly Linux, especially gaming, is not ready without plenty of command-line foo

You’re correct. I think a lot of folks are looking for something decentralized/self-hostable to avoid the lock-in disaster that Discord has created, at least, I am. And I have found a dearth of alternatives! Good article, though.
