memes@lemmy.world•How true is this upon your first trip to Japan?English
0·5 days agoBeer is beeru, hotel is hoteru, taxi is taxi.
Next time, write that in katakana: ビール、ホテル、タクシー. Anyway, it depends: but the most popular ones I know of are 熊 (くま) or 兎 (うさぎ) regarding the shape of Omurice (オムライス).

0·5 days agoKAmi is God, while kaMI is paper/hair.
That’s known as 高低 (こうてい) アクセント or Pitch Accent, like with 雨 vs 飴 even though both are pronounced as あめ, the only difference is the pitch of each sound (one is louder while the other is softer).

0·5 days agoDon’t get me started on Kanji having multiple definitions which takes it out of context using Google as it struggles to grasp nuance. Like how 最高 (さいこう) can mean “ultimate”, “best”, “highest” or “maximum” depending on how its used, this part remains up to the speaker on how its used within present context.

Games@lemmy.world•Can a region locked Switch 2 still be jail broken?English
0·11 days agoThere is region locking for the Switch 2 (mainly a separate console variant) as its sold cheaper than the international counterparts, it’s priced at ¥59,980 ($382) while the one from the US is $500 before tax. The reason why they had to region lock the system is the weak Yen, they don’t want foreigners to export them.
The only thing that’s region locked is language: the immediate boot up begins with the EULA in Japanese, leaving no option to change region since its fixed to Japan only or revert to English. You can only sign in using a Japanese Nintendo account and use their eShop, foreign games will work but translate into Japanese.

The joke is more on if foreigners assume that there’s subtitles in real life when they hear spoken Japanese. Basically, the meme is on the language barrier (for those who know zero Japanese).
