This timing is pretty amusing.

The other day I shared this video (Failure of Battlebit Remastered), which itself was uploaded by its creator only a week ago.

It’s great to see the devs coming back to it. Tbh I don’t think it’s my sort of game personally, but I typically prefer to see projects revisited and restored well instead of abandoned.

My problem with them is this and YouTube’s aggressive pushing of them in general and in the wrong places, like any device with a horizontal display (like when using a PC/laptop).

In my opinion vertical videos are better viewed on a vertical display (like a phone) and nowhere else, because everywhere else they look worse. Now that I’m thinking more of this though…I should see if any shmup people are showing off via shorts, 'cause that’d be a good fit.

Unfortunately this has Denuvo to restrict your use of your purchase. Was hoping after their first title getting criticized for this they may have changed course on that, but appears not.

Would recommend waiting till that’s removed, maybe in a GOG release.

It’s arguably layers of this cover behavior, and mostly as you say because it’s fun. The first layer, closer reading and fan theorizing, is covering why they’re into children’s media or some other media that isn’t seen as fitting them.

The second layer is entwined with the first, the fan theorizing is itself covering what some are too insecure to say or do outright, which is make fan fiction. Some may look down on making fan fiction in similar ways as they feel looked down on for what they’re enjoying, making it somewhat ironic.

In short, don’t let your fan theories remain theories, make fan fiction and your own independent, inspired work!

It’s nice and sort of funny to see that they’ve restored water to some planets’ moons. Wild to think it’s been maybe around 8(?!) years since that was abruptly removed. Always get some mixed vibes from No Man’s Sky updates due to this awkward back and forth between removing and restoring parts.

Appreciate this post OP, as I’ve wondered similar at times when not wanting to fuss with another machine for self-hosting (as often it’s not the case that I could run the server software on my main system).

Then they were able to take that game away from me and replace it with something I liked far less. This is inevitable for any live service game; if not replacing the game you liked with something else, then its removal altogether so that no one can play it anymore in any form. It sucks.

This is a good, concise way to describe one of the subtler problems with these types of game. At least with some of them, if they’re sold without DRM, you can keep the version you like, but more often than not, those are few and far between.

Streaming isn’t the middle ground in my opinion, rather it’s unrestricted downloadable files that you can then handle however. Streaming provides some convenience but no consistent access (see various shows being delisted or shuffled between services).

Companies would love if everyone forgot having home video, in the sense of owning copies of movies and shows they always have access to and ability to watch whenever.

Mainly games built for replaying, so arcade puzzlers like Super Hexagon/Tetris Effect/Mixolumia/Equaline/etc, roguelikes such as FTL/BrogueCE/etc, or strangesims like Powder Toy or Vilmonic. Although even with those it’s more occasional, like when I’m uncertain of what I’m wanting to do.

That’s a fun mix, Gemini Rue was a pleasant surprise to see!

Something worth adding here, if you happen to know, would be if the games still work after download & install while offline. Microsoft’s been rather inconsistent with this over the years (which is part of why Xbox One fell behind PS4 at launch).
