You can use Calibre + DeDRM and some jiggery pokery with Windows version of Kindle, but to be honest, that’s just really fucking annoying and it’s just easier to sail the high seas and get already open version of your book.
Glorified network janitor. Perpetual blueteam botherer. Friendly neighborhood cyberman. Constantly regressing toward the mean. Slowly regarding silent things.

Just keep working harder! It’ll trickle down!

They’re still running on VC money so it’ll be a while. My guess: ads, selling user data, AI training on user behaviours, limiting what content is suitable (getting rid of NSFW), promoting corporate brands (so algorithmic advertising) and adding crypto in one way or another. And all the other tricks that older platforms have been doing.
And probably burying the thought of distributed protocol, hoping people will stop talking about it.

should work as cross-indexing domain-specific, configuration-specific video galleries
Yes indeed - this is great idea and probably the only way a “web scale” distributed video service can work - unfortunately this doesn’t quite exist yet. Even mature implementations like Mastodon have hard time dealing with “global” free text searching (or any kind of taxonomy). But maybe that’s the idea that starts a truly free web!

I doubt it. Bandwidth and storage costs for distributed video on the scale of YouTube isn’t going to happen without some kind of monetisation beyond stray donations.
Places like Nebula have better operating models but they’re also very niche.

Bsky is just another VC financed grift though.

Boss I’m tired of AI
Oh heaven forbid wanting to discuss things in discussion forum instead of watching “content”.
I repeat, what exactly is your problem with Linus? Point me to the kernel.org thread where he is being a jerk to you? Or at least the issue you have in kernel development?
I’m trying to discuss this with you. You keep shouting something about content.
So discuss or get the fuck out.
Yes please, if it’s only 4 minutes you should be able to air your grievances with Linus in text fairly easily and save us all from having to watch some shitty YouTube video
You are accusing him of being a jerk after all.
He has track record of being extremely blunt. This has been the case since the 90s., though he has made attempts to be less direct in the past decade or so. What’s your problem specifically?
Normally you’d link the kernel.org mail thread, not a YouTube video.
Care to summarise your beef with Linus in text because I’m not watching that.

All of them have really bad audio and as such, they’re completely useless.

Threatening us with good times? I think I’ll stick to Mutt.

Enterprise antivirus products have had PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) category forever. Seems its categorized as “HackTool” so not malware.
Insane in the mainframe

Well, that’s good. The less features the site has the better. Here’s to hoping they’ll fade to obscurity!

The Swedish Social Democratic party (supposedly staunchly left wing) are the ones behind Chat Control 2.0. So just voting for left is not a guarantee we actually get sane MPs in the parliament.

I guess it’s time to update uBlock Origin lists.

Average Bethesda experience I guess

Teaching kids good, healthy anticapitalist values is important. It’s also good to teach them some basic computing and privacy skills, because they’re not going to get that anywhere else. They’re going to be under lot of social peer pressure to have the latest phones and being connected on social media, consuming information from algorithms. They need to understand how to minimize the harm from Meta and the big tech.
Same applies to the copyright industry and their practices (along with corps who are heavily anti-repair like Apple) - they need to understand the exploitation model of capitalism and lobbying - from there, let them make their own choices.
You’re saying Lemmy usage is turn on? I’m not judging, you do you, but that’s a weird fetish
