Because normal users can’t be trusted to maintain their devices… Bu the time you’re forced to update you probably already have already had 2-3 months to do your updates…
I honestly never had issues with my windows installs because I just update on a timely manner.
Bruh, forced updates are a different fucked-up thing I’m not even talking about right now. (OS devs shouldn’t be concerned about whether or not they can trust their users. Users should be concerned whether or not they can trust their OS devs.)
What I’m talking about is being able to update silently in the background while you’re still using your computer. And if the updates need a restart to apply, that restart only takes as long as a normal reboot – you don’t have to sit around for 45 minutes looking at a blank ‘applying updates, don’t shut off your PC’ screen and unable to do anything.
Even if some Linux distro started having forced updates because they couldn’t trust their users to update, it still wouldn’t be as bad because the updates don’t interrupt your work nearly as much.
Had to boot my work Windows laptop a while ago, because the software I have to work on uses some stupid Windows sign in thing, and I wasn’t fast enough getting Kerberos working before everyone went on vacation.
I’d forgotten that every single piece of software handles its own updates, and to install anything you have to like, go around to different places and download it. It’s crazy.
Nevermind the file manager making a dozen HTTP requests every time you launch it.
There are a few tools like that, including one by Microsoft themselves (winget), but nothing is centralised and not everything will be available via it.
I just want to get my work done. It’s bananas how much faff is in the way.
Windows users cannot understand the absolute absurdity of “I can’t use my computer right now, it’s updating.”

Like cavemen. Can you at least use homebrew or something on windows?
