I don’t know much about it at all and cannot find much, but I have recently heard of Kamtape. The site has the look of July 2005, apparently, but I think it might go the way of most every other noncorporate video platform like Odysee and Rumble and start getting filled with unsavory people.
And unless Odysee has changed, we ain’t got really any alternatives besides just blocking ads or Peertube. Even then, it would be real hard to get creators to move onto either platform for not wanting to deal with a site where slurs can be reported but aren’t guaranteed to be removed ( in the case of Odysee ) and payment isn’t as guaranteed as it is with yt ( which is already shaky as all hell )
You also can’t dislike the slop, you can’t dislike ads, you can’t report misleading ads, nir comment that theyre trash. Its literally stationary slop.
Yes, we’ll get right on that! Who is paying for it again?
I just disabled shorts in Youtube Plus, enabled sponsorblock and return YouTube dislike. Modern problems require modern solutions
One day we will have a peer to peer video sharing platform… One day…
If only peertube existed…
I’ve used peertube. Not a lot of good stuff on there. And I guess that’s the problem with trying to vie against YouTube – you’ll always start at zero.
I’d contribute, but I don’t make internet videos.
Hey, just a hypothetical, what’s stopping me from making a peertube instance and just adding in a bunch of my favorite youtubers video collections there and letting like minded people watch them? Just the cost/data logistics?
There’s an ethical consideration in that those youtubers didn’t consent to their work being on peertube.
But other than that – like technically and in terms of Peertube rules – you might want to ask someone else. I don’t know the answer. Sorry.
Chicken and egg problem. I really wish that more youtubers at least trip loaded their videos on peertube. Peertube even has an option to automatically mirror a YouTube channel effortlessly.
You can contribute differently. Archive YouTube channels or re-upload memes or video-guides.
The two hurdles I see are viewership (current inertia has everyone browsing on YouTube) and monetization (people rely on ad money that comes from those watching 30sec of insurance slop).
There are weaknesses in YouTube, like algorithms forcing creators to reach the 10 minute mark, or unfair content ID detection, but we might need a good corporate player to invent something against them. And I do mean a company - content creation is a business for a lot of people, not just an open source project.
RIP dislike button 😔
PipePipe has a way to filter out shorts.
≡ --> Settings --> Content Filter --> Filter Short Videos (turn to ON)
PipePipe is Boss. Buy them MFs a coffee! (Ko-Fi)
i just blocked the entire front page of yt, I don’t remember seeing a single suggested video which i didn’t regret watching.
I go there to look something up. Usually videos on how to replace something on my car, that sort.
I don’t understand blindly sifting through videos. What’a stupid fucking waste of time.
it’s a type of entertainment, like watching tv or Netflix. that much i can understand. mainly because i mostly use it for those reasons, but i just follow particular creators. just each time you go there you get some complete bs suggestions, which are always clickbait. on top recently a lot of that “content” is so obvious to be entirely ai generated. the yt algorithm just sucks. at least for me… but somehow that is how a lot of ppl earn their livelihood.
I’ve been using newpipe for a couple years now. But I guess that’s coming to an end soon
What, why?
Because of this https://keepandroidopen.org/en/
You’re never gonna catch me alive! *installs custom rom*
If only custom roms was available for any phone tho. :c
Like, I had to buy new phone two years ago, cause my previous phone was falling apart (literally, I had to reglue the screen) and the only good option that was on the market without annoying notch for front-facing camera - was nubia z70. No notch, no weird “eyebrow”, nothing. Just screen, as it fucking supposed to be. Long story short, it have pretty fast snapdragon, but there no roms cause of that. Plus bootloader straight up locked from the factory and afaik, there no way to unlock it easily.
Oh, right. I thought YouTube did something, but… yes, the sadness that is Google.
Am I safe if I don’t update Google Play Services?
That was my solution. You can freeze google services on your phone to stop the updates but then you have to choose between the functionality of many apps you got from the store and all the ones you did not.
However Google has relented by allowing provisions for a sort of “dev mode” like you have on all android phones where you just have to do some esoteric bullshit to opt back in to installing from other sources. For now, anyway. You know how they are.
Guy has a condition where he can only click the build number 5 times 😢
I like shorts. I say this again and again: Curate your shorts by liking and subscribing. Press “don’t recommend this channel” for shit you don’t want to see.
Hone your algorithm. 👍
You don’t home the algorithm. It hones you. Finds what you engage with the most and exploits you. Every short form video site does this. It makes it addictive to you so you stay on it and see more ads.
It doesn’t care what you like. Only what keeps you on there. Even if it’s things you hate. And your probably thinking “oh lll just say I don’t like it”. They don’t care. Corporations don’t care. They just want to maximize the profit from you.
- I only see stuff I like on YouTube shorts these days, so honing the algorithm has worked for me, so that’s incorrect. I’ve done it.
- It doesn’t “care” what I like, but I’ve told it what I like and it gives me stuff I like. Mission accomplished.
- You don’t get ads on YouTube shorts. Not on your TV, not in the app. At least I don’t. 🤷♂️
