Are there problematic instances? Is this a real issue or lighthearted fun for memes?
I gotta admit, this really puts me off the fediverse. Newbies have to figure out what an instance is and how to engage. No idea how to pick out an instance. Don’t even know that defederation is a thing. Join an instance (all describe themselves as interest oriented communities, just pick one that looks good), and don’t know to check for websites that tell you how many others are defederated from your instance. Now people start talking about you being on the “wrong” instance because of the political ideology of the people who run your instance and how you picked wrong…WTF. Get your account established and start enjoying Lemmy…and after a while your instance shuts down. WTF. Go to post some gaming content, and there are 5 PC gaming communities of varying sizes, how do I get my content seen?
I’ve ended up going for an instance that seems to have the least amount of defederation, based in an area I think is stable, and now I cross my fingers to hope it doesnt turn out to be shunned by the rest of Lemmy, or shut down suddenly.
ya low defederation is the way, defederation should only be done to instances that causes abuses by allowing large amount of bot accounts/DDOS-ing the fediverse/allow rampant ban evasions, not when you don’t like the content (blocking should remain on individual basis)
the lemmy.ml flagship instance is notorious for stalinist tankies, also hexbear and lemmygrad. The lemmy devs are largely tankies for context. I imagine that’s what OP is on about
