The original project “Photonic Fence” is real and theoretically work however it never turned into a product because it requires very expensive components to identify and kill a mosquito in the fraction of a second it passes in front of the device not to mention the risk of that laser reflecting on something and blinding a passing person.

However other products with same concept are for sale currently and those are the fraud.

Regarding VPN being slow, two possibilities here:

1. They analyze internet packets, detect VPN connections and deliberately throttle them.
2. They just slow down anything that is not a common protocol (not http, https, ftp, …) that would make other things like torrent or even ssh session to be also equally slow.

If it is the first possibility, I know that OpenVPN with static key tend to be very difficult to detect if not impossible. Its also a bit faster but it has its cons that I encourage you to read about.

If it is the second possibility then you need to disguise your VPN traffic as https. I know its doable but I am fuzzy on the details.

I know duckduckgo rely on Microsoft bing for search results so I was assuming the AI is from ChatGPT?

I just looked now at their chatbot and they offer dififerent options most are based on OpenAI’s GPT (which even if self hosted, still relying on OpenAI). one other option based on Meta’s Llama and Calude.

Only reasonable option seems to be Mistral Small 3 which /u/horseloaf seem to suggest as well.
