This is what I bring up with a coworker all the time as to why education is so important. Knowing the mistakes and pitfalls from the road to get to where we are right now is important so you don’t waste time trying to reinvent the wheel. Also it helps when you look at a problem and think “The solution is SO obvious! Just X!”. After education you tend to think “There’s probably a good reason we don’t ‘Just X!’, I just am unaware of it.”. Though you srill need to do your due diligence and research.

That said, there are always ideas that weren’t feasible at the time, or some breakthrough that they never thought of in the past that could make something relevant.

I struggled at math as a young kid because I hated doing everything the long way and showing every step. I got a mental math book that taught how to do longer form multiplication in your head. I could multiply 2-3 digit numbers in my head and just tell you the answer.

My teacher made me do it on the board in front of everyone and swore I was cheating somehow because if she couldn’t do it, a kid couldn’t either.

I was also reading Michael Chriton books in the 4th grade, and teachers thought that I wasn’t because kids don’t read books like that.

School was kinda annoying with how it would punish you for being anywhere outside of normal. Even if it was positive.

  • So- this would potentially render in-game cosmetics useless. You could just DLSS some cosmetic over your character for ‘free’ and skip paying for in-game cosmetic items. You could retexture or skin a model into something else with this tech, theoretically.

Heck, this could be a banned feature for online competitive games if you DLSS enemies to be easier to see.

Non-gaming applications of such tech are kinda frightening, but good to be aware of the possibility. AI swapping of characters has been something they’ve been working on. I’m guessing it will be sold as some kinda feature where you can give the AI some model of yourself, and it swaps the main character of a show or movie for your likeness. People will find it neat and try it and it will sorta work, but mostly just be a novelty. Then you’ll see that data get used for advertising, where they swap out the character in the Ad for you to catch your attention. If they try to catalog every person, this could be valuable and used to maliciously scam people by cloning your voice to mimic you and do all sorts of terrible things.

I imagine in a few years after some major scams and such that we’ll need some new verification systems to try to ensure that transactions are between real people and not just AI with your information. Yes, it will be intrusive and tracking, but will be required to maintain online commerce. Online marketplaces will struggle and possibly collapse without some way to authenticate a transaction. Hey, we may see a return to physical stores and doing everything in person again!

  • That makes sense. Microsoft didn’t enter the console market for gamers or gaming- they entered it to beat sony. The PS2 had a linux distro you could load on it to try to sell it as a computer to circumvent luxury import taxes. If it WAS a computer, it would compete with Microsoft Windows. They were worried that a console could just sell software instead of games and be a competitor, so they threw a ton of money trying to run Sony out of business.

Microsoft never really wanted to win gaming. The war was against an enemy that wasn’t really a threat. So not killing off a console wasn’t really a “loss”.

  • Weird aside, but I have a 14900k which just eats power. About 400ish watts draw during CPU benchmarks for total ststem draw. I had a 1000w psu and finally got a 5090. Now a 400w cpu + 600w gpu should not work- but it did. I did stress test both at the same time and hit 1100w, but it lived. Thing is, most games do not stress borh CPU and GPU at max at the same time, so real world usage I was always under.

Still, I want headroom, so I got a deal on a 1500w psu. New PSU is more efficient, and running the same simultaneous cpu/gpu benchmark I hit about 960w, so the efficiency bump kept me under my old psu limit. It did lead me to get a new PSU, but technically it would have been mostly okay.

I’m starting to think that the AI hype bubble isn’t really meant for consumers. We’ve mostly killed off jounalism and news, review publications are all either dead or bought and paid for. Ads are all blocked and influencers are managed. Reviews and social commentary are tricky to engineer at scale, unless you have a huge AI farm to generate a ton of fake conversations to steer people to decisions.

Now that the tech is available to everyone, it’s an arms race to build a bigger one than your competitors to make it appear as though your ‘side’ of whatever you’re pushing is the more predominant perspective.

Adding AI crap to products is just the cover story to justify the giant costs to have your own private propaganda machine.

  • So, back to cartridges. Honestly I’d be totally fine with that- but the issue isn’t quite with my end. Some game is made, and is sold for $70. A disc costs under a dollar to produce. A cart is significantly more, and digital is just paying upkeep on a server. Digital has the highest profit margin, and carts the lowest. Discs are great for physical distribution.

That said, I would totally love collector editions in the form of a figurine with storage media built in.

  • This is what made me laugh about when drones first became a thing and everyone thought it was for spying on people for lewd reasons. Like, the Internet exists, and there is a LOT of porn on it. Never once have I watched porn on the internet and thought, “You know what would make this better? If it was shot from about 800 feet away and 200 feet up from a really obnoxiously loud device from an arguably worse camera.”

  • It’s weird watching 4k re releases of CG animated movies from the early 2000s. Some of them they re-rendered at 4k and you can see that major characters are high res, but all the background assets are not. Same with some early special effects in 4k. You can really see the rotoscoping and how some effects were done

  • Destiny. Played the heck out of 1, and 2 is just… Annoying. I still play, but I actively disuade people from picking it up.

It went from a mechanically fun game with garbage storytelling but amazing lore, to mechanically complex and hyper specialzed, still mostly garbage storytelling, and lore that is trying to constantly one up itself or nonexistent. The seasonal model was a mistake and it’s grindy for the sake of money. It really took a terrible turn down sitcom alley of having the seasonal content need stakes, but also not really change anything drastic. So it just feels like tasks for the sake of tasks… Which it is. A neverending treadmill where grinding has only very short lived rewards.
